Knuffle Bunny Too: A Case of Mistaken Identity
by Mo Willems

For Trixie, her Knuffle Bunny is one-of-a-kind—until she sees that classmate Sonja has the exact same stuffed toy. “Suddenly, Trixie’s one-of-a-kid Knuffle Bunny wasn’t so one-of-a-kind anymore.” As Trixie and Sonja argue about correct pronunciation (Trixie: “Kuh-nuffle!” Sonja: “Nuffle!”) the schoolday deteriorates. Ms. Greengrove has to take their toys away until the final bell. But just as Trixie drifts off to sleep, she notices something. “Trixie marched into her mommy and daddy’s room and said: ‘That is not my bunny.’” Tragedy ensues but triumph prevails: Luckily, Sonja noticed the same thing about the bunny in her possession, and the two sets of parents arrange for a late-night trade. Willems (who, like Seeger, has a background in animation) uses actual photos of his home and his Brooklyn, N.Y., neighborhood as a backdrop to his pen-and-inks (which were shaded digitally), and creates suspenseful pacing with cartoon-like panels, culminating in a double-page spread of the bunny swap at Brooklyn Grand Army Plaza. (Of course the happy ending calls for the two girls to wind up best friends.)
