Shoe-la-la!
by Karen Beaumont, illus. by LeUyen Pham

Emily, Ashley, Kaitlyn and Claire are invited to a party and they have no shoes to wear! Could the Shoe-la-la shoe store provide their solution?

With a sparkly cover and catchy rhymes, this board book celebrates the boundless energy of an effervescent foursome. "Shoes with zippers,/ Shoes with straps,/ Shoes with buckles,/ Shoes with taps," goes the rhythmic narrative, as the girls tug on boots, dance a jig and grab a hat and cane (for a tap dance). The four friends eschew high heels ("Sorry sir. We don't like those. They hurt our toes"), and let their imaginations soar. In LeUyen Pham's illustrations, boots make one youngster into a cowgirl, and platform shoes transform another into a rock star. But wait, the store's about to close and the girls cannot choose!

So back at home, the four take out their craft supplies and make over their own footwear. Eagle-eye toddlers will find the inspirations for their creations in the previous pages. That trip to Shoe-la-la was not wasted after all. This exuberant celebration of dressing up proves that, when it comes to expressing oneself, creativity trumps store-bought every time.
