My Colors, My World/Mis Colores, Mi Mundo
by Maya Christina Gonzalez

A charming girl acts as our guide to her home, garden and immediate surroundings. She begins with a universal sign for “peek-a-boo” as she asks, “Where are the colors in my world?/ ¿Dónde están los colores de mi mundo?” The letters in the word “colors/colores” appear in rainbow hues, and the narrator’s question leads youngest book lovers into her larger journey.

The child shows us the flowers in her garden: “Orange marigolds look like the sun./ Caléndulas anaranjadas paracen como el sol.” The words “orange” and “anaranjadas” appear in orange lettering to help youngsters make the association between the words and the color. The girl points out the green cactus/el cacto verde, and  sways on her “red swing/columpio rojo,” surrounded by the love of her mother and father. The book ends as night falls: “¡Buenas noches!” Maya Christina Gonzalez uses a folk-art style reminiscent of Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera. Her round-faced heroine, sun and moon will help children experience the universe as a unified, friendly place while they learn new words for the colors in their world.

This vibrant, spare board book is an adaptation of Gonzalez’s original book by the same name, which was awarded a 2008 Pura Belpré Honor citation.
