If You're Happy and You Know It!
by Jane Cabrera
What better way to celebrate joy than with a cast of cheerful animals and song lyrics that encourage movement and laughter? Your toddler will be singing along and giggling away by the time the first line is repeated (“If you’re happy and you know it, clap your hands…”). Jane Cabrera’s thickly painted strokes and black outlines make these creatures look as friendly as stuffed animals. And your youngster will likely notice that her pairing of animal and lyrics add another layer of humor. A chimp leads the verse on clapping your hands, an elephant invites toddlers to “stamp your feet,” and—who better?—a giraffe tells children to “nod your head!” The penultimate quilt-like spread shows each animal performing their actions (my favorite: a bird says, “Flap your arms!”), and Cabrera adds her own unique and exuberant ending to this classic nursery song.
