Harry the Dirty Dog
by Gene Zion, illus. by Margaret Bloy Graham
If bathtime sends your youngsters scurrying, they will definitely identify with Harry, the canine hero of this comical tale. Harry, a white dog with black spots, hates getting a bath so much that one day when he hears the water running in the tub, he buries the scrub brush in the backyard and runs away from home. He plays at a construction site and railyard, and slides down a coal chute. He gets so dirty that he changes “from a white dog with black spots to a black dog with white spots.” When he misses his human family and heads home, they don’t even recognize him (not even when he does his usual tricks)—not until he unearths his scrub brush and dives into the tub.
