If your youngsters know Click, Clack, Moo: Cows That Type (on the list of Twenty Classics for ages 4-7), then they will recognize the barnyard stars of this board book. That Duck, those cows, hens, and pigs appear here in an original story that teaches toddlers the alphabet.

“Animals awake,” two hens seem to cry, “beneath blue blankets.” The blankets reveal additional hens, plus… a mouse!  (One hen looks goggle-eyed with surprise to find the mouse among them.) “Clickety-clack!” says the caption for “C,” as a pair of cows and Duck stare at a manual typewriter. From there, the story builds momentum: “Duck dashing,/ eggs emptying./ Flippity-flip!” A few clues (a blanket, a basket, a pretzel bag upended by a mouse) tucked into a red wagon suggest what these enterprising animals have in mind.  The creatures race (“Vroom!”) to a place with “Watermelons waiting.” Each featured letter appears in lower case in soothing tones of orange, lime green, lemon yellow and grape—except for the “X” that “marks the picnic spot.” Of course, every toddler knows what follows an excellent lunch: “Zzzzzz.” This will quickly become a naptime—and anytime—favorite. (Note: This was first published as Click, Clack, Quackity-Quack in 2005, but the new title, a cover that emphasizes the alphabet, and a board book format merge in a winning combination for youngest book lovers.)
