Boo to You!
by Lois Ehlert

A pair of mice with some imagination and resourcefulness find a way to fend off a black cat in this scary yet humorous board book.

The joking, rhyming text keeps the mood light despite the threat of their feline enemy. "That scary cat's back./ Boy, what a bummer!/ Seeing that puss could spoil our summer." Caldecott Honor artist Lois Ehlert (Color Zoo) makes the mice from torn paper collage and string for their limbs, plus green and gold gourds for the bodies of birds. Eagle-eye youngsters will detect the eye or tail of the black cat in several of the illustrations, and a stripe raccoon tail in others ("A raccoon or a squirrel might bite a veggie,/ but a cat loves meat, and that makes us edgy"). As summer moves to fall, the mice plan a harvest party: "Guess who's the creep we didn't invite?" says the text, as the spiky backed cat races offstage. The mice use what's at their disposal, fashioning a scary looking creature to defend against the cat (revealed in a foldout page): pumpkin seeds look like teeth, wheat like whiskers. The final pages reveal the names of the fruits and vegetables used in the book, so youngsters can find their own "ingredients" for making (and defeating) their own monsters.
