Moo, Baa, La La La!
by Sandra Boynton

Let's face it: Laughter is the best learning tool, and few authors are as tuned in to toddler humor as Sandra Boynton is. This book makes the most of your child’s mastery of the sounds in the barnyard. “A cow says MOO,” the book begins. The “MOO” seems to come right out of the mouth of the black-and-white cow pictured on a grassy green backdrop. Your youngster turns the page. On the left, “A sheep says BAA.” But then all logic flies out the window on the right-hand page: A trio of piglets in striped pants, bow ties and tails holding canes dance their way across a purple page on their hind legs: “Three singing pigs say LA LA LA!” I promise that even the worst toddler mood will crack under this kind of comical pressure. With a turn of the page, all returns to normal. “ ‘No, no!’ you say, ‘that isn’t right. The pigs say OINK all day and night.” The porcine three, back on all fours, look just the way they should. Horses and ducks, cats and dogs “neigh,” “quack,” “meow,” and “ruff” their way through the pages, then gather together on the final spread to stare your toddler in the eyes and ask, “What do you say?” This book demonstrates how quickly a sense of humor develops in a young child’s life.
