A Little Books Boxed Set
by Amy Krouse Rosenthal, illus. by Jen Corace

These three board books with whimsical illustrations--Little Pea, Little Hoot, and Little Oink--will tickle your toddler’s funny bone.  From the time they begin to eat solid food, children learn that sweet treats (applesauce, pudding) follow the nutritious part of the meal, such as carrots and peas. Little Pea (2005) turns this idea inside-out with a hero who simply doesn’t like candy. Little Pea’s parents plead with him to eat sweets (“ ‘If you want to grow up to be a big, strong pea, you have to eat your candy,’ Papa Pea would say”). Finally, they strike a deal: After he eats five pieces of candy, he gets to have… spinach!

Little Hoot (2008) also stars an unconventional fellow who just wants to go to sleep at night like everyone else (“All my other friends get to go to bed so much earlier than me!” he says). His parents do everything they can to get Little Hoot to stay up late. If your child has pulled the usual stall tactics, he or she will appreciate how this book turns the tables when Mama Owl says, “What about a bedtime story?” and Papa Owl adds, “And don’t forget a glass of water!”

And for anyone familiar with the sound of a toddler upending a toy box while squealing with glee, the contrast in Little Oink (2009) will certainly entertain both you and your child. Here we get to witness parents who encourage their little piglet to create chaos in his room, and to generally turn it into, well, a pig sty. (“If you want to grow up to be a respectable pig, you must learn how to make a proper mess," Papa Pig tells Little Oink.)

This board book set is roughly the same price as just one of these three books in hardcover. The sturdy storage case gives you a slot on each side for a picture of your own Little Pea. Plus it makes a great baby gift!
